MUD LOGGING

Mud logging, in its conventional implementation, involves the rig-site monitoring and assessment of information that comes to the surface while drilling. We use the mud logging unit “ROZRIZ-2” (Sirius) to obtain all technical, geological and geochemical parameters.

There are several broad objectives targeted by mud logging: identify potentially productive hydrocarbon-bearing formations, identify marker or correlatable geological formations, and provide data to the driller that enables safe and economically optimized operations.

Mud logging includes observation and microscopic examination of drill cuttings (formation rock chips), and evaluation of gas hydrocarbon and its constituents, basic chemical and mechanical parameters of drilling fluid or drilling mud, as well as compiling other information about the drilling parameters.

The mud log provides independent evidence for a more comprehensive understanding of reservoir conditions and geology.

Technical data acquisition

  • Allows to control all drilling parameters to define the most appropriate and safe operating conditions. Continuous tracking of these parameters allows for quick response by the driller when trouble occurs.

Geology

  • Core examination, cuttings and mud fluid analysis supplement well log information and determine the rock type that has been drilled. This information can be especially useful when formation characteristics make wireline or LWD log interpretation complicated or ambiguous.

Geochemistry

  • Includes gas logging and luminescence analysis. The measurement of hydrocarbons helps geologists characterize reservoir fluid composition while drilling. The quantity of gas recovered and the ratios of the various gases are useful in identifying zones of producible oil or gas.
