NEUTRON LOG (CNL, NEUTRO-GAMMA, ECS)


 

Neutron log is based on the interaction of neutrons emitted by a neutron source with rock. Depending on the type of secondary radiation detected by the detector, there are modifications of this type of logging (neutrons or gamma rays).

CNL and Neutron-gamma readings are determined by the presence of elements in rocks that actively absorb neutrons (the most common are H and Cl). Accordingly, as the content of such elements in the rock increases, the values of CNL and neutron-gamma will decrease. Additionally, if drilling mud contains carbonates or barite, it will have significant effect on measurements.

 

Neutron logging allows us to do the following:

- lithology differentiation;

- saturation identification;

- calculation of neutron porosity;

- identification of the OWC, GOC, GWCК;

- well log correlation.

Elemental Capture Spectroscopy This method based on the processing and estimation of the measured gamma ray spectra at specific energy level.

The tool registers gamma rays energy, which allow to define the content of the most commonly occurring elements: Ca, Si, H, Cl, Na, Fe, Ti, S , Gd.  

ECS log is the way to perform proper evaluation of complex lithologies. As well, it’s recommended to run gamma ray spectroscopy and lithodensity log along with ECS.
